AI segment – A major switch is coming across unidentified timescales in every segment of the society. And everyone is playing a huge part in its transition. What is this big change that is causing this change globally? If you guessed Artificial Intelligence then your answer is right!

Above all in 2017, the Government asked 1500 senior business owners about AI in the United States. Only 17% were familiar with the concept. A lot of them were not sure what the concept was and how it is going to affect their businesses. Although, they understood that there was a considerable capability for altering business processes. But were not clear how they can deploy Artificial Intelligence within their organization.

Despite its dissimilarity, AI is connecting people across languages and supporting various professionals for the betterment of the society. There are two initiatives, that have left their imprints across the world. And they are leading the way that is amplifying the rewards from AI.

AI for Good Global Summit

AI segment – Good Global Summit is a leading AI United Nation Platform open for dialogue on AI. This action oriented summit in 2018 identified practical implementation of AI. And also, the supporting strategies that can improve the sustainability and life on our planet. The summit strategizes programs to ensure safe, inclusive, and trusted development of AI technologies and unbiased access to their benefits.

Decondia - AI driven thinking will help to humankind to live more sustainable

In 2017, the summit presented the first ever, inclusive global dialogue on Advantages of AI. While the 2018 summit focused on impactful AI solutions that will yield long-term benefits and will help achieve Sustainable Development Goals. The summit showed the potential of AI that can help track poverty and aid with natural disasters using satellite imagery. Plus, how AI can help in delivery of citizen centric services in the smart cities. And also, the new ways to achieve Universal Health Coverage with transparency and explainability in AI algorithm.

Professionals proposed impactful AI strategies that will prove to be beneficial in the long run. And it’s guided by an expert audience of mentors representing government, industry, academia and civil society. The leaders evaluated the roadmaps according to their feasibility, scalability, the capability to address global challenges. Besides that, the degree of supporting advocacy, and applicability to market failures beyond the scope of government and industry. The program connected Artificial Intelligence innovators with public and private sector decision-makers, which can help in building collaboration to take promising strategies forward.

Focus Group on Artificial Intelligence for Health

AI segment – Established by the ITU-T Study Group 16, the ITU-T Focus Group on Artificial Intelligence for Health’s meeting was held on 9th July 2018 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The Focus Group works in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) to establish a standardized assessment of frameworks for the evaluation of AI based methods for health, triage, diagnosis, and treatment decisions.

The first meeting of the Focus Group was at the World Health Organization’s headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland on 26th -27th September 2018. The first workshop on Artificial Intelligence for Health preceded the meeting on 25th September.

Decondia - AI's impact in the Healthcare Industry

The immediate result from the September meeting is a Call for Proposals to identify cases of Artificial Intelligence in strengthening the health services and upcoming health systems. Proposals highlighted the motivations behind AI for Health, the benchmarks in AI cases, and the datasets required to train AI algorithms.

Proposals that they submitted before 7th November 2018 came under the second meeting of the Focus Group in New York City, United States.

Output documents:

  • Updated FG-AI4H Whitepaper
  • A-102: Document Call for Proposals: This drafted paper included use cases, benchmarking, and data
  • A-103: Document criteria for data to be accepted by the Focus Group
  • A-104: Document thematic classification scheme

As stated by group’s Chair, Thomas Wiegand, Executive Director of the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute and Professor at TU Berlin: “The Focus Group strategizes to establish policies and associated processes for the performance evaluation of Artificial Intelligence algorithms in health. This will be a complicated and challenging process, that we will undertake step-by-step, beginning with this first Call for Proposals.”

AI segment – Conclusion

AI segment – AI is not something that we will experience in the future. But it is something that is present in today’s world and is being integrated with and deployed into a variety of sectors. These include finance, technology, national security, health, transportation, smart cities, and criminal justice. There are a lot of examples, where AI is already making an impact in the world and augmenting human capabilities in a significant way. And these two global initiatives are leaving a sizeable global stamp that is creating the positive impact across the world. The initiatives focus is on leveraging $16 trillion wealth and new job opportunity creation by 2030.

Finally in the World Economic Forum report, across 12 industries, the adoption of machine learning and big data from 2018-22 is 73% and 85% respectively. In Healthcare, the statistics are 87% for big data and 80% for machine learning.
